Welcome to the December 2016 edition of the Balance * Plan * Reward Newsletter.

Dr. Frank Luntz offered these three slides about what Americans Value and Want in his “Words That Work” presentation at the 2016 NAIFA Performance + Purpose Conference in Las Vegas.

From slides #1 and #2 we can summarize that Americans Value Hard Work, Family, Never Giving Up & Community but on the other hand Want Peace Of Mind.

What comes first?

  • Hard Work, Family, Never Giving Up & Community

Or

  • Peace Of Mind

Now look at slide #3.

What comes first?

  • Security … Stability

Or

Peace Of Mind

Can you have Peace Of Mind, even though you have more money than God when you have Unmet Needs of Security and Stability?

In my view, Security and Stability are not Values, they are Unmet Needs. Can one have consistent positive feelings and beliefs if they have the emotions of anxiety and fear fueling negative beliefs that I am not safe and stable?

The foundation of my work is based on the premise that people don’t know the difference between a Value, Want or an Unmet Need.

This is the root cause of the absence of fulfillment: not having a clue what one is Valuing, Wanting or Needing.

Fulfilment is a deep Soul oriented experience that you feel when you are expressing your Values. But again, people don’t know the difference between a Value, Want or an Unmet Need.

Look at the two Google searches on the right of Value and Want.

Values – a person’s behaviors, principles or standards

Wants – a lack or deficiency of something

Without going into too much depth …

The first definition on Values is a contradiction. Values relate to WHY we do what we do and relate to 90% of our success. Behaviors relate to HOW and WHAT we do and relate to 10% of our success.

The second definition of Wants comes from scarcity and loops right back to Unmet Needs of Security and Stability. They are not Values; they are Unmet Needs. Can one have consistent positive feelings and beliefs if they have the emotions of anxiety and fear fueling negative beliefs that I am not safe and stable?

Would it be safe to say that the Values of Hard Work, Family, Never Giving Up & Community would come first before the Wants of Peace Of Mind and Security / Stability, or is it the other way round?

Are some people Valuing Hard Work & Opportunity to seize the day for the betterment of their business and personal lives  or Valuing Peace Of Mind & Security … Stability to hanging out, living day to day just to get away from their troubled business and family?

Regardless of the answer to this question, could it be that some people are not clear on what their Values, Wants and Unmet Needs are? Or could it be they have Values, Wants, and Unmet Needs competing with each other? In my view, helping people to understand Apathy, which is an absence of understanding Values, Wants and Unmet Needs, will help them to inspire their business and life going forward.

Apathy is a result of not knowing what your Values are and always Wanting the next Want with the expectation that the next Want is going to fulfill the Unmet Need that is missing. Again, the absence of fulfillment is a result of never ending Wants and Unmet Needs without an understanding of one’s Values. One will never have Peace Of Mind, Security or Stability when they are not Values based.
