Demonstrating By Example To Show How To Ask For A Referral
January 23, 2012 by Simon · Leave a Comment
I received the following excerpt of a message from one of my clients and I have included my reply as a demonstration of how to ask for a referral.
Dear Simon,
Thank you for the clarification. That really helps. I spent the afternoon listening to the coaching conversation recorded with you last week.
Thank you for everything you have been doing for/with me thus far. I must tell you that this is a very good process for me and I am invigorated and excited.
I have also given your name to a few people, one a financial planner and one a financial product wholesaler.
All the best, hope it is not so cold where you are as it is here!!

Working With A Coach Requires The Following Adult Behaviors
January 18, 2012 by Simon · Leave a Comment
- Blocks out time to complete assignments in advance of their coaching call.
- Completes requested assignments on time.
- Replies to e-mails within a reasonable amount of time.
- Arrives on time for appointments.
- Doesn’t blame the coaching program to justify their inaction.
- Doesn’t blame their associates, company and suppliers.
- Doesn’t make excuses.
The adult behaviors that one demonstrates will be exemplified by their clients in kind.
Do You Really Do Your Best When You Follow A Routine?
January 3, 2012 by Simon · Leave a Comment
I hear financial advisors say this to me all the time; “I work best when I follow a routine”.
Which routine are you following?
Laura and I have just finished day 1 of 3 of our 2012 planning process with the following completed:
- Everything That We Have To Give Thanks For In 2011
- S.W.O.T – Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, Threats
- 2012 One Page Business Plan
- Sales Activity Calculator
We will continue the process tomorrow with the following:
- Budget Cash Flow
- Time Block Year – Free Days, Buffer Days & Focus Days
- Job Description Review: What Is Working? What Improvements Can Be Made? What Can Be Delegated? How Can Technology Be Implemented?
The work that we did on our 2012 planning process really caused us to understand our business and inspire ourselves to a whole new level versus following into the trap of an unconscious routine.
“When there is freedom from mechanical conditioning, there is simplicity. The classical man is just a bundle of routine, ideas and tradition. If you follow the classical pattern, you are understanding the routine, the tradition, the shadow – you are not understanding yourself.” – Bruce Lee
How Do You Emotionalize Your Business?
August 30, 2011 by Simon · Leave a Comment
( Laura and I are taking a break from August 31st and we will see you back here on September 6th … have a great Labour Day weekend! )
As a frequent customer of Starbucks I’ve been thinking of whether or not to buy Howard Shultz’s new book Onward for a while.
I made the purchase after watching a segment of an interview with Howard Shultz by Piers Morgan on CNN because of these compelling words from Howard.
“To build an enduring brand you have to emotionalize the relationship of your business with your customers and employees.”
Those words made the book sale and they reminded me of how we work with our clients to emotionalize their business by helping them discover their values, their positive beliefs and positive feelings all creating a strong foundation for their business to stand on.
Howard Shultz’s words reminded me of another compelling book that I read in 1996 by Tom Chappell of Tom’s Of Maine called The Soul Of A Business.

Do We Work With Big Hitters Or Consistent Hitters?
August 24, 2011 by Simon · Leave a Comment
We had a referral to an advisor that was looking for a coach that works with big hitters.
What is a big hitter? It is said that a big hitter is one who carries a lot of weight and influence in the work that he/she does.
Is a big hitter always a consistent hitter?
Michael Jordan said that he shot a thousand baskets a day until he reached the NBA, and based on Michael’s career it would be safe to say that he was a consistent hitter.
Then there is baseball, while I’m sure there are challenges in basketball, baseball seems to have been riddled with controversy with the use of steroids to maintain being a big hitter.
A big hitter is not sustainable because it requires the sustained use of power.
Power used to be a popular buzz word, but is now being replaced by strengths. Power generally means you have power over something: over yourself, over another, over circumstances. With strength, there is no competition or need to have power over something because you’re so naturally strong, there is no threat. A coach works to strengthen their clients more than empower them, because if they’re strong, they’re naturally empowered without empowerment being the focus.
We help our clients get their needs met and build on their values, vision and business plan.
We work with consistent hitters and among some of our clients are owners of practices with teams of 5 – 12 junior advisors / marketing assistants / back office assistants earning $600,000 to well over $1,000,000 in gross income specializing in life, CI, DI, ILA’s and money and some are MDRT top five national or provincial producers with leading life insurance companies.

At What Point Does It Make Sense To Either Hire Someone Or Fire Myself?
August 19, 2011 by Simon · Leave a Comment
A prospective client e-mailed me the above question with an overview of their situation and here is my reply.
I’m observing:
• You have a lot of personal goals and you are increasing your professional goals to reach your retirement goal.
• You have just re-invented your business so to speak with a new name, brand, web site and marketing plan.
• You are expecting results from the new name, brand, web site and marketing plan.
To answer your question; At what point does it make sense to either hire someone or fire myself?
I’m suggesting that you put all of your current projects, actions, routines on a huge list. In the next column, determine the amount of time required to do them and then schedule them by time blocking them in a 7 day a week / 24 hour week at a glance calendar. You will either have enough time or you will come to the conclusion that you cannot fit it all in. Your next steps will be to re-visit the list of current projects, actions, routines to ask yourself what do I love to do and what must I delegate in order to fulfill your goal. At the same time, you may come to the conclusion that you must hire up meaning hiring someone that is better than you need versus hiring someone just to get by.
Having said all of this, you may be having a values conflict which might be driving you to trying to do too much being a doer of everything and a master of nothing.
If you are having trouble setting the time aside to do what I have suggested then this is a sign that there is a values conflict.
Either what I am saying to you here rings true for you or it doesn’t.
If you have had enough of operating with a values conflict spreading you too thin and if you are interested in meeting and exceeding your goals and taking the strong actions that will be required to achieve this …. I can help you with this … but only if you have had enough of doing it your way.
Please e-mail Laura if you want to schedule an appointment to discuss how I can help you to meet and exceed your goals.
Best regards,
Simon
Our Client’s Thoughts On Building Confidence, Energy & Self Esteem
August 5, 2011 by Simon · Leave a Comment
“Prior to working with Simon, I had lost my confidence and had low energy and self-esteem… I now have a lot more energy and I have a lot more confidence, my practice has improved as a result.
What I like best about Simon Reilly’s coaching is that he challenges me, and has opened my mind to get me thinking differently about myself and my practice … It shed new light on things. My AHA! Moment… was realizing that this is a process and it takes time; it doesn’t happen overnight. A person has to want to make it to the next level, you have to accept where you are now and that you have to erase your preconceived ideas, and your old habits (re-train your brain). You have to listen to your coach and you have to do the assignments in order to have success. The assignments were really, really eye opening for me and the Excel spreadsheet tools are excellent!
Also, I never expected you to provide me with tools like the hiring process, or that you’d be able to help me with the challenge of hiring employees in my business… as the process of hiring someone, gives me a great deal of anxiety.
Simon’s coaching forced me to re-evaluate things that I would have never re-evaluated on my own without guidance. I now look at things more critically and try to look at things in more than just a one or two dimensional way.”
